Custom Awnings & Canopies in Houston, TX

Our Houston headquarters has been fabricating and installing custom awnings for residential and commercial projects across Harris County for over 40 years.

AAA Awning has been Houston-based since 1984. Our 8810 Madie Drive fabrication shop serves every corner of the metro — the Heights and Montrose restaurants, Galleria retail storefronts, West University residential patios, downtown corporate entries, East End industrial walkway covers, and everything in between.

Houston's climate is the reason we build the way we do: year-round UV, Gulf humidity, occasional hurricanes. We spec materials that handle all three — Sunbrella fabric, heavy-gauge aluminum framing, marine-grade fasteners — and engineer anchorage for Texas Building Code wind loads.

Weather in Houston, and what it means for your awning.

Houston's climate is among the toughest in the country for outdoor fabric and metal. Year-round UV, 60+% summer humidity, salty air pushed in off the Gulf, and a handful of 100°F+ August weeks that cook anything exposed. On top of that, the metro sees serious rain events (Harvey, Imelda, Beryl), occasional hurricane winds, and the once-in-a-decade hard freeze. Every one of those is a different failure mode for a poorly-specced awning.

We build to all of it. Sunbrella fabric handles UV and humidity without fading or growing mildew. Aluminum framing doesn't rust the way steel does in coastal humidity. Stainless fasteners, proper flashing, and engineered anchorage handle the wind events. When we quote a Houston project, we're specifying for 30+ year weather exposure — not summer-cottage-use.

Popular products in Houston.

The most-asked-for products in Houston are fabric patio awnings (mostly Sunbrella, sometimes vinyl-coated for food service), motorized retractable awnings for back patios, aluminum carports in the older neighborhoods where detached garages didn't come standard, and metal walkway covers for schools and apartments. Restaurant fabric awnings with custom graphics are steady commercial work — Heights, Rice Village, Montrose, and the Washington corridor all see regular AAA storefronts.

One Houston-specific call we take often: shading second-story west-facing windows. Afternoon sun through a single-pane window in a 1960s Meyerland rebuild can push interior temps 10–15°F higher than the rest of the house. Small awnings mounted above those windows solve it without running HVAC harder. Worth asking about if your electric bill spikes in July.

Where we work around town.

Commercial work is a big half of our Houston business: restaurant patios along San Felipe, Kirby, Washington, and the Heights; hotel entry canopies for Uptown and Montrose; walkway covers and bus-line shade for HISD campuses; drive-thru awnings for the banks along Richmond, Westheimer, and Bellaire; and metal canopies for the medical buildings around the Texas Medical Center.

How projects run in Houston.

For Houston projects we typically schedule a site visit within 3–5 business days of your call. Residential projects rarely need city permits but HOAs (particularly in West U, Bellaire, Southampton) usually require architectural review — we'll provide drawings and material specs with the quote. Most commercial work in Houston requires permits from the city's Public Works department, and we coordinate engineering and stamped drawings as part of the scope.

Every AAA product is available in Houston.

We fabricate in our Houston shop and dispatch our own crews to your property. No local subcontractors.

Questions we hear from Houston customers

Will my HOA in West U / Bellaire / Southampton approve a custom awning?

Most of the inner-loop HOAs allow awnings if they match the home's architectural character and sit within setback requirements. We provide drawings, fabric swatches, and color specifications formatted for architectural-review packets. The Southampton HOA is the strictest of the three — expect 2–4 weeks for their review. West U and Bellaire typically turn around in 1–2 weeks.

What's the best fabric color for Houston sun exposure?

From a longevity standpoint, darker solids (Captain Navy, Burgundy, Forest Green) fade a touch faster than lighter colors over 10+ years in direct Houston sun, though Sunbrella's solution-dyed acrylic is fade-resistant across the whole palette. From a heat-reflection standpoint, lighter colors (Natural, Linen, Sand) reject more solar heat and run cooler underneath. Most of our Houston residential clients end up picking based on facade color more than performance — both hold up.

Do you install awnings in East Houston, Fifth Ward, and the Port?

Yes. Our Madie Drive shop is in Northside Village, so East Houston, the Port, and the Ship Channel area are actually some of our fastest response times. We regularly install industrial canopies and walkway covers for logistics and industrial facilities along I-10 East and I-610 East.

Do you actually service Houston?

Yes — Houston is part of our regular service area. We dispatch our own AAA Awning install crews from the Houston fabrication shop and travel anywhere in the Houston Metro & Texas Gulf Coast. There's no travel surcharge for standard residential or commercial calls inside this service area.

How do I get a free estimate in Houston?

Call our nearest office at (713) 694-3930, or submit the contact form on this site. We'll schedule an on-site visit at your Houston property, measure, photograph, discuss design and materials, and follow up with a written quote. No obligation, no high-pressure sales.

How long does a typical project take in Houston?

From signed contract, most residential awning or patio projects in Houston complete in 2–6 weeks. Commercial canopies and engineered walkway covers run longer depending on stamped drawings and permit review. We give every quote a firm timeline.

Do you handle HOA or city permit submissions in Houston?

Yes. For HOA architectural review we provide drawings, materials, and color specs. For Houston city permits or stamped structural drawings, we coordinate engineering and submit to the AHJ as part of the project scope.
